I always feel torn at the end of summer. I love the long, light evenings and the fruit (peaches forever!) and the glittering lakes and rivers I see on my hikes around the Puget Sound. At the same time, the start of the new academic year has its own possibilities. I relish the evenings I spend reviewing concerts to recommend to students for the next nine months. Every year I’m surprised and excited by what I find. This year I’m particularly thrilled about two interdisciplinary shows at Meany Center – Circa and Conrad Tao and Caleb Teicher. Both include elements of movement, dance, or percussion (or all three!) combined in new ways with some of my favorite composers.
This year’s studio field trip will be to a piano duet of Holst’s The Planets that is also a collaboration with the UW Astronomy department. Our theme for improvisation and composition this year will be duets and pairs. I’m looking forward to hearing what new pairs and visions my students bring to life!
